Above is the before picture. Below is the current state. The after picture will follow in the not too distant future.

Going to be no mantle, smaller alcove, dropping the TV down a bit (it’s higher than it looks in the pics), keeping the upper molding, removed the lower molding. We went with a white porcelain tile made to look like white marble with grey veining, that will be laid in a herringbone pattern (floor to ceiling, front and sides) . Similar to below pic, but so far all the tiles we’ve pulled out and looked at are mostly white with subtle veining, haven’t found any that read grey like in the pic. We’ll see once we get them all out and up though.

We’d love to make the damn thing much tighter to the wall, but it’s not really possible with the insert we have. At least just removing the builder’s special mantle already has made it feel like there’s so much more room.

Good luck! I’ve never done finish work very well. I can frame, and do plumbing and electrical but anything that requires things to look good? I hire someone. That shit is magic.

It’s a joint effort between us, and the son of my MIL’s friend. He is a professional. So, I guess, it’ll be mostly him and we’re just around to help out as needed. But still, it has begun!

Having a pro around to supervise is extremely smart! Not only will it look great but it will probably get done a lot sooner.

I did the same, but a little more extreme. 10' high by 6' wide slab of Brazilian granite.

There’s a pic here https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/4209-164th-Pl-SE-Bothell-WA-98012/82216092_zpid/?view=public

The brick in the wall may be tied in to the chimney but the stuff on the floor absolutely needs to go.  With it being a gas stove I don't think it needs to stick out like that either

Kinja monster appears to have eaten your picture, or whatever you tried to post.

I’d think you should be fine to minimize that as much as you can, while still keeping enough to fit the stove on. I’d also give the brick some kind of a wash-look. But, that’s just me. Honestly, for now it’s not really all that bad. Just takes up a lot of floor space. Possibly unnecessarily.

That looks great. I love that you have your fireplace tucked into the corner.

Also, you could’ve just copy/pasted, you didn’t need to try and sell me your house. Although, we have considered moving to Washington...

I’d have to check the code books but I think the brick on the floor is generally there to catch hot embers, which would not exist with the gas stove.  the problem i’d have now is that the floor under the carpet in hardwood (or at least thats what the previous owner said) so if take the brick out, i’ll have to patch the hardwood if i shrink the size down./  i want to get tile and just make it flush so it doesn;t obstruct furniture and isn;t a trip hazzard

Really, that is the biggest issue I’d want to solve as well. Even if nothing else changes, removing that bulkiness/hazard aspect would be great. Though I do wonder what would happen with the change in height, how that would affect the stove venting. Certainly people have run into this before and there’s an easy solution, some kind of risers or something.
